Description: This small level 1 melanoma exhibits asymmetry, the presence of more than one colour and several clues to melanoma. There are fragments of reticular network, some of which is broadened pigment network. There are blue-grey dots. There is at least one linear-irregular vessel and a few dot vessels

History: This 44 year old man had a history of one previous level 2 melanoma. This lesion was encountered at  a routine skin examination 6 months after excision of the previous melanoma. The histology report read "Sections show a small focus of level 1 superficial spreading melanoma arising in a dysplastic compound naevus."
